Tursiops is an NGO that seeks to contribute to the conservation and protection of cetaceans, as well as to promote the dissemination of research carried out on them, focusing especially on the western Mediterranean.<\/h2>\n

This NGO has passed through the\u00a0Pitiusas\u00a0continuing with the\u00a0tracking\u00a0programme\u00a0of\u00a0sperm whales and dolphins they record\u00a0with hydrophones to know\u00a0about\u00a0their habits and behaviors.<\/h2>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Marina Ibiza has received\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>Irifi<\/span>\u2019<\/span>, a Tursiops vessel captained by Txema Brotons and\u00a0<\/span>Marga<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Cerd\u00e0<\/span>, in charge of carrying out the projects for the conservation and protection of cetaceans in the Western Mediterranean\u00a0<\/span>in which<\/span>\u00a0this association works<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tursiops is an NGO that seeks to contribute to the conservation and protection of cetaceans, as well as to promote the dissemination of research carried out on them,\u00a0<\/span>focusing,<\/span>\u00a0especially on the western Mediterranean. Much of their work focuses on rigorous research to understand these species, know them in depth and suggest the\u00a0<\/span>best way to protect them, and Marina Ibiza has supported them on this expedition by providing mooring at their facilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since they acquired\u00a0<\/span>Irifi<\/span>\u00a0in 2017, the Tursiops team ha<\/span>ve<\/span>\u00a0traveled almost 20,000 nautical miles, but since 1998 they have been sailing<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0looking for families of sperm whales and dolphins that they can identify by the marks on the fin or the tail, but also by their sounds. “Each family of sperm whales has stereotyped patterns of clicks” says Txema Brotons, Dr. in Biology, “in\u00a0<\/span>Pitiusas<\/span>\u00a0we have even identified the same individual dolphin 11 and a half years after the first encounter thanks to the photos taken of their fins”.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This team of biologists\u00a0<\/span>recogni<\/span>s<\/span>es<\/span>\u00a0each individual bottlenose dolphin by listening to the recordings obtained thanks to the 7 hydrophones strategically placed in Ibiza and Formentera, and which they\u00a0<\/span>analy<\/span>s<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0periodically. It is with these hydrophones that they collect the ‘signature whistles’ of the dolphins, which they later catalog<\/span>ue<\/span>\u00a0to identify individuals,\u00a0<\/span>analy<\/span>s<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0their presence and study their movements throughout the year, to find the best way to protect them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among their\u00a0<\/span>recogni<\/span>s<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0achievements is the current delimitation of the Cabrera Maritime-Terrestrial National Park, which was expanded, promoted especially by Oceana, and for which they have also provided a large amount of data about the presence of cetaceans in the area. Likewise, they managed, in coordination with other groups from France and Scotland, to create an IMMA (Important Marine Mammal Area) which, with a surface area of \u200b\u200b22,708 km2, surrounds a large part of the eastern Balearic Islands and the Mallorca Channel, seeking the protection of the sperm whale in our waters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
